Interesting perspectives from a former linesman and referee: bit.ly/hbuUsHHoggarth retired in 1994, but if I recall, I think he was strongly "urged" to retire. Scapinello went retired in 2004 and is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

But with the technology today, and the fact almost all games are televised with 2 different telecasts (sometimes 3), isn't the increased scrutiny he talks about or interference by the league higher ups true in all sports. Personally, as you may know, I am not a fan of the two referee system in the NHL. This is another example of more isn't better (I feel the same way about 6 person crews in baseball playoff games). Especially in hockey, the ice is too small as it is and with the league office now handling disputed goals for the most part, one referee is sufficient to properly adjudicate an ice hockey match. Will they miss things? Not as many as you might think. Too many ticky tack penalties in the NHL of today. Too many cases where a referee closest to the play makes a perfectly good no call and the butt insky from 90 feet away feels he has to make the call. Most of the old time referees I have heard interviewed, including Ron Wicks feel the same way. It was a tough job to begin with. Now the pressure has really increased and it's pretty hard to do a job when you can expect a call between periods in your dressing room that you're calling the game too tightly or not tight enough.
