In those seasons the NFL tried a different numbering system that didn't go over very well. Officials at each position were numbered 3-20.
I know that Jim Tunney was 3, Pat Haggerty was 4, Fred Silva was 7, Ben Dreith was 12. What numbers did others wear during those two seasons?

I am glad they ditched that numbering system, too many guys with the same numbers out there. Probably made it easier for evaluators too by reducing the confusion about who made a call while reviewing the tape. I think most of the officials kept their number prior to 1979 if it was a low number.
I can add these referees:
Jerry Markbreit #9 Bob McElwee #10 Fred Wyant #11

I wonder if Ron Botchan wore #10 (later was #110) since I believe he started in 1980 when this number system was in place. For 1979, I think I can add some more: Umpires: 3--Palazzi 4--Keck 5--Boylston 7--Conway 8--Harder 11--Wells 12--Hamilton 14--Demmas 15--Morcroft 17--Fiffick 19--Hensley 20--Sinkovich can't fish a name out for 10 or 16

I think I might have the numbers for all positions for 1980 in a pro football preview book I have in my closet at home. If I have it, does anyone want me to post it this weekend?

The referee list for 1980 is the same as that previously listed. I have three additions to the umpire list:
10 Tom Myers
16 Tony Kramer
18 Dave Moss
Complete lists for all other positions in 1980 to follow when I am in the mood to type. In addition I have the years in league, occupation, home town, and college of all officials if anyone is interested in any one in particular.

1980 Head Linesman
17 Jerry Bergman 15 Ray Dodez 20 Frank Glover 9 Ligouri Hagerty 12 Dale Hamer 16 Norm Kragseth 6 Ed Marion 3 Leo Miles 14 Walt Peters 4 Bill Ross 5 Sid Semon 18 Berl Toler 7 Tony Veteri 8 Dale Williams
There are two with number 12. There was also an error in one of the referee numbers in the book. Appears there was not good proofreading done so I can't guarantee all these numbers are right.
Marion was number 6 - FF7

If memory serves me, I believe that Ed Marion wore #6 in the 1979-1981 system. Also, wouldn't Al Sabato (#10) still be on staff? It seems to me that there were 15 crews in 1980, each with a full complement, plus two swing officials.

There were only 14 Head Linesmen listed. The book probably messed up one official's number up and inadvertently left out another. Anyway:
1980 Line Judges
16 Bob Beeks 12 Ron Botchan 5 Gene Carrabine 7 Tom Dooley 14 John Everett 9 Jack Fette 15 Bama Glass 4 Wilson Gosier 18 Richard Hantak 19 Dave Hawk 6 Jack Johnson 10 Vern Marshall 8 Dick McKenzie 3 Bob McLaughlin 17 Dale Orem 11 Bill Reynolds
