Thanks Big Al!
What a funky numbering system. Glad they ditched it.
Some names there I haven't heard in a long time, bring back memories!

This goes back further - I found a 1974 officials roster (that's as far back as I can go):
Referees: 6 - Bernie Ulman 7 - Tom Bell 12 - Ben Dreith 21 - Fred Swearingen 32 - Jim Tunney 40 - Pat Haggerty 42 - Jack Reader 46 - Chuck Heberling 56 - Norm Schachter 60 - Dick Jorgensen 71 - Bob Frederic 72 - Cal LePore 74 - Fred Wyant 81 - Fred Silva
I think I have almost all the lists from 1974 on. I know I have everything from 1985 on.

I believe that Wyant wore #75 (#74 belonged to HL-LJ Ray Dodez).
Also I have two questions:
1) Which was the number of the late Umpire Dave Hamilton in 1974, as Jack Reader wore #42?
2) Who was the FJ (now BJ) who wore #11 in 1986. He belonged to Pat Haggerty's crew?

Also, I was wondering who was that SJ number 25 in the famous playoff game San Diego-Miami of the 1981-1982 season? The officilas still had that strange numbering, The R is Fred Wyant (11) and the U is Tom Hensley (19): es.youtube.com/watch?v=AvmFczOcUK0

The SJ was 25 and the line judge in that game was 23. That was the final year of the numbering system, and I can't believe that a rookie would work a divisional game, let alone two. My guess is that veteran officials took numbers higher than 20 as the front office realized that the funky system wasn't working and expanded the number pool. Who are they? I have no clue. If someone has the 1981 officials roster, please post! And, thanks again to Big Al who worked so hard to post his information.

In this clip, at 7:05 is Fred Silva, and a few seconds later is current BJ Steve Freeman, then a Bills' safety, intercepting a pass for a TD against the Rams in 1980. es.youtube.com/watch?v=mCmI-16HjiMDo you believe at that time that Freeman would become an NFL official (and also a good one at his position?).

The side judge in the San Diego-Miami game was Vince Jacob. Dale Williams was the HL #23, not the LJ. The LJ was Bill Reynolds, who normally wore #11, but wore #30 for that game since Wyant and Pat Knight(BJ) were also assigned that game. By the way, the FJ was Bill O'Brien. The league added #21-25 in 1981 because as officials shifted crews more and more crews had duplicate numbers. Also, Jorgenson's 1981 crew had Boyce Smith as LJ, Hantak as the BJ and Dick Dolack as the FJ.

Thank you for shedding light on this! The league saw the writing on the wall for this and wisely dumped the system.

I'm moving up (again) this post, as they're many clips from that era in Youtube and it's interesting to identify the officials.

Dave Hamilton also wore #42 prior to his leaving the league.
