Reading the crew lists it looked like from 1983-1986 the crews remained relatively static yet for 1987 there was a huge shake-up among the crews. This was before I really watched the officiating so I am wondering what prompted this?

This was before I really watched the officiating so I am wondering what prompted this? Maybe it was an experiment to have as little shake-ups as possible, to see the effect of such an idea. When the desired results didn't happen, or contrasting results did happen, they ditched the idea.

According to Jerry Markbreit's book "Born To Referee" (and the later updated edition "Last Call") the league decided to regionalize the crews that year, prompting the changes.
He mentions that he retained only two crew members from the 1986 season.

Dennis Riggs wore number 30 (taking Dan Wilford's number) and
John Robison wore number 46 (taking Chuck Heberling's number who retired in 1986)

Another interesting project would be having a history of each number and who wore it (not counting 79-81 years).
I.E. 95 - Bob McElwee - 76-02; James Coleman 05-present

I'm actually looking for who replaced who as referee over the years, but this is excellent info to start off with.
