Well then, for sure Markbreit replaced Bell. Cashion replaced Schachter.
I think Lepore replaced Jack Reader.....

Some interesting observations I found while searching online:
Terry McAulay replaced Phil Luckett in 2001.
Dale Hamer came back for at least 2 seasons as a referee until he moved to Line Judge for 1998. Who did Hamer replace as referee and who replaced him?
Nothing on the replacements of Swearingen, Ulman, McDonough, or Fitzgerald.
I assume Dick Jorgensen replaced Rennix. After Jorgensen's death, the NFL went with 15 crews until '95 or '96, presumably Mike Carey was the 16th referee at the time.

McDonough retired after the 1973 season. Lepore may have replaced McDonough.

The 16th crew was added in 1995 when the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars joined the NFL, bringing the total teams to 30.
The 17th crew was added in 2001, one year before the 32nd team, the Houston Texans, joined the league. I have always been curious about why they picked 2001 to add the 17th crew and not 2002, or even 1999 when the new Cleveland Browns began play. Does anyone know why?

I made a few changes to the spreadsheet. First thing is that it appears the NFL added another crew in 1989. Therefore, I added a second sheet to the spreadsheet. The first sheet is labeled 1983 - 1988 and the second sheet is labeled 1989 -. You can click on the tabs at the top of the spreadsheet to switch between the two. I also changed the order of the officials that were listed. For 1983 - 1988 they were listed from top to bottom R, U LJ, HL, BJ, FJ and SJ. For 1989 they are listed top to bottom R, U, LJ, SJ, HL, BJ and FJ. It works for me because I get my info from the official NFL game summaries, and that's how they have it listed. Of course, the replay official will be listed last. I've included a last update notification on the last row of the spreadsheet. Anytime I make changes to the spreadsheet I will update the time and date. That way you can check to see if any changes were made to the spreadsheet by seeing if the update time is different from the last time you checked. 1989 looks like it is finished but it is not. I'm still working on it and changes are possible. If it says work in progress then I am still working on that year and changes are possible. If it says re-verifying then I am almost finished with that year and changes are less likely. If it says complete then I am finished with that year and I am moving on. I will delete where it says complete whenever I move on to a different year. So, if there is nothing there then that year is complete. Here's the link for 1983 - 1988: spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tc7QKrr8MmzLPMRqSMeYQpQ&gid=0And the link for 1989 - : spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tc7QKrr8MmzLPMRqSMeYQpQ&gid=1

Would anyone be interested in compiling a "family tree" of referees from 1970 to today? I'll put the list in this post. Note: This list is incomplete. All current referees are in boldTom Bell(1970-76) -Jerry Markbreit(1977-98) -- Jeff Triplette(1999- ) Ben Dreith(1970-89) -Tom White(1990-2005) -- Jerome Boger(2006- ) Bob Finley(1970) -Bob Frederic(1971-87) --Johnny Greer(1988-2004) --- Scott Green(2004- ) Walt Fitzgerald(1970) -Gordon McCarter(1971-95) --Dale Hamer(1996-97) --- Tony Corrente(1998- ) Pat Haggerty(1970-92) -Ron Blum(1993-2003) --Bill Vinovich(2004-06) --- John Parry(2007- ) John McDonough(1970-73) -Cal Lepore(1974-80) --Tom Dooley(1981-91) ---Gary Lane(1992-97) ---- Ron Winter(1998- ) Jack Reader(1970-74) -Gene Barth(1975-90) --Larry Nemmers(1991-2007) --- Carl Cheffers(2008- ) George Rennix(1970) -Dick Jorgensen(1971-89) Norm Schacter(1970-75) -Red Cashion(1976-96) --Bill Carollo(1997-2008) --- Don Carey(2009- ) Fred Silva(1970-88) -Dale Hamer(1989-94) -- Walt Coleman(1995- ) Fred Swearingen(1970-75) -Don Wedge(1976-78) --Jerry Seeman(1979-1990) ---Bernie Kukar(1991-2005) ---- Gene Steratore(2006- ) Jim Tunney(1970-90) -Stan Kemp(1991 only) -- Ed Hochuli(1992- ) Bernie Ullman(1970-79) -Bob McElwee(1980-2002) -- Dr. Walt Anderson(2003- ) Jack Vest(1970-71) -Chuck Heberling(1972-85) --Dick Hantak(1986-2002) --- Pete Morelli(2003- ) Fred Wyant(1976?-1989) -Gerald Austin(1990-2007) -- Alberto Riveron(2008- ) Chuck Heberling(1986 only*) Howard Roe(1989-95) -Phil Luckett(1996-2000) -- Terry McAulay(2001- ) Mike Carey(1995- ) Bill Leavy(2001- ) *Served as swing referee that season. This should be the complete list. That is a fantastic list that is the result of much hard work! Thanks! Wyant became a referee in 1971. I always thought he replaced Rennix/Finley/Fitzgerald, but that wasn't the case.... Also, going off the crews lists, Roe took over Silva's crew in 1989, so Roe replaced SILVA, contradicting a prior PM I sent you. Sorry.

Thanks so much for these lists. As for the changes in 1971, Rennix, Finley, and Fitzgerald retired. Jorgenson, Frederic, and Wyant took their places. Rennix worked with Parker, as did Jorgenson. Finley worked with Palazzi, as did Frederic. Fitzgerald worked with Sacco, and when he retired Swearingen, already a referee, worked with Sacco, and Connell (who had worked with Swearingen) was U to Wyant.

Tom White should really be listed as Wyant's replacement since 5 of Wyant's crew were on White's crew in 1990. Austin's crew in 1990 was cobbled together, but he wasn't listed as a referee in the preseason roster, so I would say he actually replaced Jorgenson, since Jorgenson was on the preseason roster, but fell ill.

Since the league went from 16 to fifteen crews in 1990, which crew was dismembered?

Since the league went from 16 to fifteen crews in 1990, which crew was dismembered? It looks like Dreith's crew was broken up. Dreith want to swing LJ, Moss, and Jackson left the league. Wedge, McKenzie, Barnes, and Stanley needed to relocate. On other crews, Bob Baker left the league (McKenzie filled LJ), Wedge went from BJ to SJ (Merril Douglas went to swing), Barnes replaced Toler who retired, Stanley replaced....well I don't know.

Stanley replaced....well I don't know. C'mon Fred, that's easy! Spitler went from FJ to SJ under Grier. That opened an FJ spot on Grier's crew. Mallette went from Tunney to Grier. Merrifield went from Hantak to Tunney. Hampton went from Jorgensen to Hantak. Hakes went from Cashion to Austin (who replaced Jorgensen). Robison went from Haggerty to Cashion. Thus, Stanley went from Drieth to Haggerty. See, I told you it was easy.
