This will be the first time since 2008 that there will be two new referees to start the season (Riveron for Austin and Cheffers for Nemmers).

Dreith was asked to retire before he felt he was ready. He alleged age discrimination and the league settled the lawsuit with Dreith. The basis for his age discrimination suit was that he was grading better than younger officials. I have nothing to back this up other than pure speculation, but there must have been some offer by the league that allowed this to happen without the union taking up a case against the league. thank you for the explanation. Age discrimination is flat our wring. It is the Ben Dreiths, among others who are mentors for the new officials.

Sometimes, though in life, organizations want to change long standing attitudes and for that reason wish to clean house. I'm not saying this was true for Dreith and other referees who were dumped after long careers but sometimes they are viewed as a threat to to higher mangement wishing to impose their own philosophies and they don't want people around to second guess them. They want yes people. Just a thought.
