Another aspect is that the NFL will have to hire another person to fill the Carey vacancy. Maybe the NFL can convince one of the retired officials to come back out of retirement or one last hurrah? ? Two Carey brothers in the NFL last year, now poof!

I was expecting Leavy to go before Carey. Who are the forerunner for this R spot? Adrian Hill is a good bet...

If they don't bring a retired official back for one more year, this will be the first time since the early 1990 that there were three new referees in one season. It was due to a retirement, unexpected sickness and death, and expansion.

I personally think they will make a current official a referee. Maybe a Don Carey situation where an official is given the white hat for one season to give Shawn Hochuli or Brad Allen or Alex Kemp one year of experience?

If there are more than the 17 needed for a position, have an official from that position move to the R position. Right now, I see a surplus with the BJ and FJ positions, but one less with the HL position at this time. I could see a shift to one of the BJ/FJ to HL, and the other to be a R, then moves back next season when there are more retirements/resignations/terminations.

Two Carey brothers in the NFL last year, now poof! Some thoughts on how the NFL might operate in order to hire the 119th official - the slot vacated by Carey. www.footballzebras.com/2014/06/25/11012/

This surprises me, especially given the time frame. I'm anxious to see how the NFL handles this. Not sure if they want to have 3 new referees during the same season.

This whole thing raises an interesting question. One would think that if Winters had left on good terms with the league, that an obvious solution would have been to bring him back for one more season. Did the league consider that? Did they ask and Winters told them to go fly a kite. Or was Winters basically fired under the disguise of retirement? Very interesting.

I got the impression that Ron Winter got the Gerry Austin treatment. Then, Mike Carey unexpectedly retired and they were short a referee. I would not at all be surprised if they showed Ron Winter the door, then needed a referee and asked him to see the door and he refused to show it to them.
