Or maybe Ron Winter was just more liked on this board than by the NFL. He seems like a nice guy but he was not the ref you wanted out there in what was expected to be a heated game because he did not do a good job of keeping a lid on stuff. I also think the league wanted him to cut down on the amount of penalties and that just did not happen. It is one thing if they are warranted but Winter's crew was probably the most notorious for very marginal calls. In recent when a different ref subbed for Winter that went down dramatically which makes me wonder if it is really a crew issue or just Ron Winter

While I am a Winter fan, I think his playoff assignment record shows where he stacked up in the eyes of the NFL. While I threw "un-retiring" out there as a possibility, I think the NFL wanted to move forward, control their white hat turnover, give some new guys waiting in the wings a chance, and move on.
Carey's surprise retirement kind of upset the apple cart, but the NFL hired several officials with white hat experience, so they slotted Allen in. I think Allen will be a test case to see if an official can really go straight from college referee to NFL referee in the modern day.

mike and FF& agree with both on Winter. Average official. Need to be above average to have a long career in NFL. Also, agree about Carey that was the surprise. If Carey left before Winter was asked to go, then Winter might have stated one more year.

I agree with Fred, at some point the NFL has to develop new blood. Keeping some guys around past their prime inhibits development.
Brad will do great I believe.

Because it's the kind of thing we do on this blog and not just to belabor the point, it does bring up some interesting speculation (which is all it is) regarding Winter (adding the "s" to his name was my mistake). In any event, when the news broke of Winter's "retirement", our pal zebra tried to contact him and wrote in his web site that Winter didn't want to talk about it and sounded really upset. And Winter has buttoned his lips since then. All this leads one to ask...
1. Evidentaly it was strongly suggested to Winter that he either retire or be fired.
2. To help him make the decision the NFL preferred, he was offered a nice severance package on condition he keep his mouth shut.
3 Well we do remember them bringing back Herbling for one more season when faced with a vacancy just before the 1986 season although at the time, it was pretty clearly voluntary on Heberling's part because he was going to be a replay official in the IR 1 era. So...
4. Everything else being equal, given the time factor here, wouldn't it have made more sense to bring Winter back (leave everything else aside) than to bring in somebody who has never worked an NFL game before in any capacity and has no concept or feel for the NFL game?
5. Which simply leads one to conclude the league was not happy with Winter and/or his performance in recent years and wanted him out.
Personally, I can't reach any other conclusion.

Watching old highlights from 1986, Fred Silva did work the week 9 game between Minnesota and Washington. My question is this: how many games did Heberling and Silva worked that season? I know Dick Hantak replaced Heberling initially in 1986.

He relying stayed for the season, and worked one of the CC. Hantak stayed until he retired. Silva stayed through the 1988 season.

Bring back Alberto Riveron for one season or use a Swing Referee? Or bring Ron Winter back for one more season? Or not...

This whole thing raises an interesting question. One would think that if Winters had left on good terms with the league, that an obvious solution would have been to bring him back for one more season. Did the league consider that? Did they ask and Winters told them to go fly a kite. Or was Winters basically fired under the disguise of retirement? Very interesting. Winter, cj -- no "s" at the end.

I know Dick Hantak replaced Heberling initially in 1986. Officially, Heberling was a swing official, but for a good chunk of the season he subbed for Silva. Once Silva came back, I think Heberling went from crew to crew like Vinovich did in 2012 and wound up with the Championship game.
