The Philadelphia Inquirer ran an article similar to this one, stating that Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense is forcing officials to be in better shape. The League needs men with experience, and it would be crazy to have crews of young, less-experienced gazelles working games. Jack Fette, the great line judge who was never in the greatest shape, was an incredibly efficient referee. Hopefully the League will judge this on a case-by-case basis.

At least the officials spotting the ball between downs and those responsible for the deep wings should be in better physical shape. I have seen plenty of people who look out of shape do better on physical fitness drills than people who would appear to be more fit. The bigger issue is that when your knees and hips are shot maybe you should be looking at moving to a position that requires less running. There are also a number of young officials who have demonstrated themselves in college ranks that are not even in the development program (Reggie Smith, a Referee in the Big XII, is only in his early 30's) so it is not like there are not people out there
