If you happen to see a preseason game and observe something interesting related to officiating....post it here! Be sure to post the date or the preseason week of the observation you see.

Is there any way to get a read on how the ref-to-ref communication is functioning?

Is there any way to get a read on how the ref-to-ref communication is functioning? I would LOVE to have a scanner listen in to the officials frequency (kind of like how TV sometimes listens in to race car drivers talk to their pit crews), but I'm sure the NFL will icks-nay that right quick.

There is a whole crew of people whose job it is to handle the frequencies of equipment at each stadium. The broadcast crew even has to register their wireless mics.
Just like the sideline and QB headsets, the officials equipment is encrypted even if you happen to hack the frequency

PHI @ CHI - Week #1 - Fri., Aug 8 -- Torbert seems poised and very clear on the mic. I'm a bit surprised we're seeing flags on just about every down and it seems there are still many conferences even with the communication equipment.

Sames goes for Cheffer's in STL on the last play of the game- intentional grounding with 10 sec runoff...

I agree with jc, though I remind myself that last not was the first game-situation use for Torbert's and Cheffers' crews.

@mikepereira · 17h Effect of points of emphasis...51 defensive holds, 24 illegal contact, 11 offensive PI, and 30 illegal hands to the face. Thats in 16 games!
@mikepereira · 15m Reminder...Don't blame the officials for the number of flags. They are doing what the competitiion committee directed them to do.

It looks like they are using 8 officials in Chicago with three wing officials on the HL side.

I saw FJ and B on the endline when they were inside the 20, also pretty sure I saw one official at each corner as well. So I'm guessing 8 ref's as well. FredFan7: How deep was the 8th official on H's side?

First of all, welcome to the forum, rosenlund! I hope you keep posting.
The 8th official was about 10 yards downfield from the H, then the they had the FJ on the HL side. Hugo Cruz, a LJ trainee was on the SJ's side working with Laird Hayes. I don't really know between two trainees and the mechanics experiments how all of this worked out.
With all the officials on the sideline it just amplifies the BIG hole in coverage over the middle.....

Thank you very much. I might just do that! The "8th official" did the tipped signal during Clausens interception. He might be the umpire they'd like to have midfield. Took some screenshots to show the placements: imgur.com/a/zKjHl

FF7 Cruz was the HL last night... Ok, thanks for the correction. Things were pretty experimental at Soldier Field last night, but at least the HL and SJ were on the right side of the field!
