Thank you very much. I might just do that! The "8th official" did the tipped signal during Clausens interception. He might be the umpire they'd like to have midfield. Took some screenshots to show the placements: imgur.com/a/zKjHlLook at that endline coverage with 8 officials! If you want to have 8 officials, I still say you need more of a presence in the middle of the field. The NFL boxed themselves in saying they moved the U for safety reasons. Now if they move the U back to the traditional position all game and go with the NCAA Center Judge, they could open themselves up to a grievance that they are willfully putting the U in harms way.

Looks like there will be 3 officials in the backfield - 2 u's and R...note the NE and SEa games. This may be how 8 officials in NFL..

Just what we need; another official gumming up the field and making his (or her) presence felt with marginal calls. Far better they miss a call here or there then they interfere with play or call phantom fouls (which has been my position on the NHL going with 2 referees; the ice surface is too small for today's athloetes as it is and putting an extra body out there simply often gums up the game; same is true in football.
As far as this pre season is concerned, some of the games have been unwatchable because of the penalties. Last nights Philadelphia-New England game was not watchable. Now I'm not blaming the officials; they're doing what they have been told to do. But for pete's sake, you have to let the defense play the game too. Nobody is paying to see Ed Hochulhi announce penalty after penalty (well maybe they do for Ed). Bill Chadwick was a great NHL referee and spent another decade as a broadcaster. He always said the rule book is a guide but what you need more than anything else is common sense. Let the players play and let them decide the game. It's njot just football. It's not just hockey. Mexico was booted for the FIFA World Cup on a ridiculous pk call in stoppage time which, though technically correct according to the rules, was sijmply a call you don't make.
Let them play the game and cut out all these marginal calls so the game can flow. nAnd ple;ase. When they loosen up, which they will the only question being how much, don't give us the bull that the players have adjusted. The NHL has clearly loosened up from what they did just after the lock out in 2004 and continues to deny it; ;the claim is the players adjusted.
Mark my words. Anjd I'm rarely wrong on these things.

Its now like The Nutty Professor has been turned loose and is performing all sorts of 8 man crew experiments. IMO either adopt the NCAA mechanic of the Center Judge or leave crews at 7.

Blandino has made some solid contributions to the officiating department, but now we're starting to see, IMO, the effects of a non-official running things. Communication devices that aren't used and don't reduce the number of on-field conferences, this 8th official nonsense, etc.

I do not think the 8th official is a bad idea, but I think the NFL is looking at various iterations of it so that when it is implemented it is done in the best manner. From looking at the tape it appears a lot of the stuff on the interior of the line was being missed that the U in his old position would have seen. The problem is as the NFL becomes more and more a passing league the R really needs to pay attention to the QB so you need a second official in the offense backfield watching the other players

These preseason games have been almost un-watchable with all of the flags. I know they're trying to put the clamps down on fouls in the defensive secondary, but this is getting ridiculous.

I wish they would do away with the illegal contact flag and if you are going to flag holding don't do it where the QB is not looking at all

Does anyone have an opinion on last night's 8-man crew, with two back judges?

I think the two back judges are unnecessary. If you're going to use 8 officials, I believe the Big 12 model makes the most sense.

I agree, these games are on the verge of being unwatchable, Yes, the preseason is where you try out new ideas, but to me it seems there is no rhyme or reason on having 8 officials on the field...to me it seems everyone is more confused than ever, and I haven't seen less conferences since the guys with stripes have started wearing the headsets, they still use hand signals, etc, etc...maybe I just against change or not wanting to re-invent the wheel, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

As far as the communication system, it takes time to teach an old dog new tricks. They're used to doing things a certain way. When they realize the headsets work and make things flow better, that'll change.

I was in the 1 spot in the country that got to watch all of Torbert in Det and Allen in Cleveland. Allen doesn't sound like a rookie. He didn't stutter on any of the calls. Torbert also looked pretty composed in his game. Too hard to evaluate the rookie refs based on the number of flags being thrown in the preseason games but for those of you who were wondering how Allen would sound on the mic in his rookie year of officiating, he sounded like a 10 year veteran.
