Sort of amusing that those of us here who love to track referee assignments never picked this up! Well let's see. But we all picked up that Walt Coleman has never worked an Oakland game since the tuck rule fiasco and Ben Dreith never worked a Patriot game after that personal foul call in the playoffs.
Are there any other referees or other official who have been kept from working a team's games currently? It'll be interesting to see how Carey handles Washington games (CBS of course only does no morfe than 2 in a season)!

Cj Ben Dreith worked Patriot games but was several years latter. Fans here still think he was wrong even though there was no relay on the hit back in 1976.

Did Mike leave for TV because he really wanted to be on TV or was it because either he didn't get a playoff assignment last year or that his brother was either let go or retired?

Well he was scheduled to work this season but indeed he is getting up in age and this might have been his last season anyway but opportunities like this don't come along often. It also left the NFL scrambling a bit and I don't think it is the best of situations to put a first year official into the Referee position although he might do well. It is interesting to speculate if Carey had left them know in February he was leaving, would they have kept Winter one more season?

cj, I think the league wanted Ron Winter to leave. I think you would have seen someone like Hussey or Helverson get the job

I don't get why they gave it to a rookie official when they still had 2 guys left from last year's training (Mackie, Hill) who they could have given it to. The league stuck their foot in their mouthes a couple times. They ran Winter off and then Carey left so they short an R. They ran off Mark Baltz and now they are short a HL due to injury to Camp. Who knows what happened to Weir but now they are short a FJ due to Horton injury.

Hill has yet to earn a playoff spot, and the conventional wisdom is to master your black-hat position before being considered for white hat. Apparently, Dean did not see anything from Mackie to essentially roll the dice for an entire season. There was higher confidence to go to a rookie white hat.
Horton was originally a swing official, but was moved to a crew when Weir retired. It seems that for at least the first few weeks of the season, a crew that has a bye will be supplying their FJ.

Where are Horton and Camp? Neither have worked the pre season.

The thing about Hill is he was actually a very good Referee in C-USA and then the Big 12, but he has struggled so much in the NFL that he is probably battling for his job. As soon as he works a playoff game I gurantee you he will once again try out for the Referee position because IMO he will be stronger there than he will be at LJ/FJ. I'd probably say the same about Barry Anderson who was also a solid Referee in C-USA. Mackie's look might be over for awhile because guys like Novak, S.Hochuli, and Kemp will all get looks with Novak probably getting a job in the next 2-3 years.
