Can someone explain the purpose of an official pointing at the sideline? For instance, in the Seattle/S.D. game last week, (where the NFL has admitted they blew the replay procedure) the BJ points at the sideline as Percy Harvin runs by him. Obviously, he is not ruling the runner out of bounds, or he would have killed the play. Is he just acknowledging the close call at the sideline? If so...does this motion have anything to do with trying to alert the replay official to a possible close call or something?

113 views and no answer?
Was this not exactly the same as the game between Pitt and Miami last year? The official got praised for making a gutsy call that left the play nonrenewable.
Now the league has to admit they screwed up the review process anyway.

My sense is that he is indicating the feet to be in bounds, but now that officials have the wireless headsets, they can be combining verbal and nonverbal communication.
If you are looking for an answer as to a universal signal, no that is not one.

Somebody should tell the officials this so that they get used at some point. Happy 1000th post to me!

I think this is a great question and a hat tip to mid city for pointing this out. So the official was pointing out that he was in bounds? Obviously if he was pointing out that he was out of bounds he would've just blown the whistle and called him out. Who is the official and what is his status? How did he miss this call? Harvin was clearly OOB.

Rob Vernatchi was the official who pointed at the sideline. When I was watching this live, I thought Vernatchi was going to call Harvin OOB, but obviously he didn't.
