Boy they really shift the officials around in the secondary.
U115 is a good umpire to help break in Hussey.
It looks like Derryl Lewis is the only official to leave the field that we didn't know about.

They must think Barry Anderson will be the next referee since he shifted to U. Both new umps were refs in college.

When did they hire Jonah Monroe? He doesn't have a number.

When did they hire Jonah Monroe? He doesn't have a number. This is just a guess on my part but maybe when DeBell was dismissed since it seems like that happened very recently plus he is a SJ just like DeBell was.

Shawn Smith was listed as a SJ on the original hire list but is now an Umpire. They must see him as a future Referee which in all honesty I do not. I would have put Novak there.

Jonah Monroe was hired to replace James Coleman who became a swing official. Very last minute, I think it was about a week ago he got the call.

As for the other 2 swing guys, they needed a bench after last season, and it would not be feasible to put a first-year official in a roving position.

In past years when there was swing officials they more often than not made the playoffs.

And considering Dana McKenzie made the Super Bowl last year there is no chance him becoming a swing Official is a demotion. It just means he will be working with many different crews throughout the year and with all the injuries we have seen the last few years it seems like a god idea to have extra Officials just in case.

Like Ben said, they are not going to make a rookie a swing as they want to break them in with a consistent crew all season.

Maybe DeBell was supposed to be a swing official and when that transpired Coleman was the only one willing to do it? Possible the league could have sweented the pot by being flexible with what games Coleman will work, less travel, his choice of weeks off etc. if not needed to replace someone during the season
Unless they were not fond of someone's performance I am not sure I understand the swap of Waggoner and Weatherford especially if someone is not up to par at FJ (or SJ) I don't see how a swap will change things. Deep to Line or vice versa I can see but not FJ/SJ

Coleman has an Achilles injury, so his position as swing official is ceremonial. He's out for the season. DeBell was not considered for a swing official.

Deep to Line or vice versa I can see but not FJ/SJ I also don't understand the amount of changes between SJ and FJ. It seems like they were just changing for the sake of change. Someone like Rick Patterson who has been at SJ for 20+ seasons is now changing positions?? It just doesn't seem necesary. One move that I thought was good was moving Hochuli from SJ to BJ. Hochuli was a pretty solid BJ in the MWC and Big 12 but had a very rough season last year as a FJ. They also moved Ed Walker from LJ to HL which is what he was in the Pac-12. I don't understand why they are changing so many new hires positions. Why would they even hire Jonah Monroe this late if he is not in his familiar position of BJ? I just think it leads to poor Officiating from first years if they are at a different position.
