There is a good video on the NFL operations website where blandino talks to the new hires in the offseason and says that they have three years to prove themselves or they're out. I don't have the link but it was an interesting video.
Blandino did fire an official after his 3rd season already after the 2013 season so there's precedence.

...he monitors every game but does nothing to really help them (not just the new ones of course). Besides, he never officiated a game in his life. Almost inconceivably in a mult million dollar operation like the NFL.

How long does Blandino still have to prove himself?

I know the article is on the NFL ops site somewhere. I just don't remember where.
Blandino is and will always be an idiot. I've given him enough time to form an opinion of him. McNally was a pioneer in officiating, Seeman did a good job, Mike P advanced officiating and made it transparent even if he wasn't always popular. What has dumb Dino done other than make it impossible for a receiver to make a catch?
I try to give the benefit of the doubt to officials and most do a good job but whoever gets the super bowl likely wouldn't have gotten it 20 or 30 years ago when officiating was much better.

Wonder if dale shaw is on a short leash. Blandino said rookies have three years to prove themselves. This is Shaw's 3rd year and he is on Morelli crew.
He is one of 2 active officials hired before 2014 not to have worked a playoff game. Blandino fired Keith Parham after his 3rd year and he didn't work a playoff game. Parham' last game was when he failed to call an illegal formation on a field goal attempt and that ultimately changed which team got the last AFC playoff spot.

I wouldn't think so yet, everything that I have seen from Shaw tells me he is better than Parham was but what do I know. I think if Jimmy Buchannon or Greg Bradley fail to make the playoffs this year they will be gone. They have been in the league since 2009 and have had ample opportunity to prove themselves, 1 combined playoff game between the two (way back in 2010 at that) is just not acceptable progress. I am pulling for both to snap out of their funk and work the playoffs this year, we shall see.

Besides the field goal issue what else did parham mess up that got him canned? He was the one that confirmed with Bill Leavy that Leslie Frazier should be penalized 15 yards for challenging a turnover (something that he can't challenge), although the rule had already changed as you get charged a timeout instead of being penalized 15 yards. Mark Perlman and Jimmy Buchanan was trying to tell Bill Leavy that its not a penalty, while Keith Parham was nodding ferociously saying yes it is a penalty. Ultimately, Leavy agreed with Parham and penalized the Vikings. (Week 3 MIN vs CLE) Link: www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2013/09/22/nfl-minnesota-vikings-cleveland-browns-referee-error/2852945/Also throughout the 2013 season, Parham made several awful defensive holding calls and missed many DPI's and was inconsistent with most of his calls. Plus the fact that he can't understand rules makes him a pretty bad official and deserving one to get released.
