Sorry to hear it.I watched one of his last plate jobs in August of 1992 at Veterans Stadium. My neighbor friend was a fan of Dutch too. We saw the box score and saw that he worked first base the night before at the Vet. We both decided to go to the game and we both took our little brothers.
We sat in the nosebleed section. The first pitch came in and he bellowed "BALL ONE!" You never hear umpires call a ball at the top of the Vet. My little brother asked, "What was THAT?!" I said he called ball one. The next pitch was a strike and he gave it the full Dutch. He worked with glasses that night and he later revealed his eyesight was going bad, forcing him to retire.
Game 5 of the 1980 World Series featured Dutch at his best and it drew the attention of NBC.

Looks like DR will be added to the left sleeve soon. Sadly, it's getting crowded there.......

In the late 70's and early 80's when he still lived in Oshkosh he officiated high school basketball games in our area. Saw him do 2 games, probably the best official I ever saw doing Wisconsin high school games. Didn't get to do State because of spring training. He had a lot of Earl Strom's mannerisms on court, was a lefty like Earl. His partner back then was Larry Van Alstyne who works practices for the Packers, Mike Mc Carthy likes having officials at all practices where they do team drills.
