In the past decade, MLB has taught umpires to not escalate situations, even suspending umpires for being to aggressive in arguments.
But in prior years, umpires were taught to be aggressive in arguments, matching the player or manager scream for scream and cuss for cuss. They did so to show they were in iron control of the game and could not be pushed around.
The following video is an example of such behavior. Umpire Jerry Crawford and Cubs manager Don Zimmer get into it.
PS: Kudos to announcers Steve Stone and Harry Caray for just letting the pictures tell the story and not yap during the entire rhubarb.
