Clemson @ FSU - Stuart Mullins Why doesn’t Riley Johnson of the ACC get any Florida State games? I don’t think he has ever officiated a game involving FSU.

It's possible he has some sort of connection to Florida State, whether he attended there or has relatives involved with the university. In that case, he would be ineligible to work FSU games.

Former SEC official Tom Ritter went to Alabama, and he was able to work Alabama/LSU in 2011. So why can’t David Smith (who allegedly went to Alabama) work Alabama games, and why can’t Riley Johnson work FSU games?

So why can’t David Smith (who allegedly went to Alabama) work Alabama games, and why can’t Riley Johnson work FSU games? Each league sets its own rules in that regard. As far as I know, the ACC has always barred officials from working games involving schools they attended or have had relatives attending. There also are a number of other restrictions, such as you can't work games in your hometown. This varies from league to league. I know the PAC10-12 used to allow officials to work games involving their alma mater. This was because they had a large number of officials that lived in the LA and Seattle areas and such a rule could have caused scheduling headaches.
