Dave's greatest claim to fame. He as scheduled to work the fourth game of the NJS-BOS series, the game after donughtgate with Don Koharski. When the Devils got the TRO after their coach had been suspended, he was insubordinate and refused to work despite being ordered to work that game.

Dave Newell was the referee when Tom Lysiak of the Black Hawks intentionally tripped linesman Ron Foyt with his stick during a 1983 game vs. Hartford at Chicago Stadium and imposed a 20-game suspension upon Lysiak.
