Umpire Ed Feaster had to duck quickly to avoid being hit by a pass from Alabama during the first quarter. Just goes to show the danger that umpires are exposed to in the defensive backfield. Luckily he missed getting hit.

Side judge John Hayes flagged Alabama's Xavier McKinney for a late hit out of bounds on Clemson receiver Justyn Ross. This was a good call, as both Ross and McKinney were clearly out of bounds when the hit happened. "4 feet in the white" is a common phrase officials use to help distinguish a legal continuing action hit from an unnecessary late hit.

Good bean bag, whistle and signal control by line judge Ron Tipton on a fumble recovered by Alabama to keep the ball.
He calmly dropped his bean bag at the spot of the fumble, didn't blow the whistle, and calmly signaled third down when Alabama recovered the ball.

Tua Tagovailoa was hit by Clemson cornerback Treyvon Mullen and subsequently fumbled. Although it was what looked to be a painful hit that dislodged the ball, Mullen did not foul. The sole fact of contact with the crown of the helmet is not enough for targeting - there must be forcible contact and an "indicator" of targeting. Mullen led with his hands and attempted to wrap up Tagovailoa (no indicator of a launch, crouch/follow through, etc), and the contact was not forcible. Therefore, there is nothing about this contact that should cause the crew or replay official to consider targeting.

Crew now needs to be alert for frustrated, chippy play from Alabama and lippy stuff from Clemson.

Marginal PF, but good to send a message that the crew won't tolerate nonsense.

In case you see players numbered 50-79 as eligible receivers.
In NCSS, ineligible can line up in an eligible position at the end of the line as long as he doesn't go downfield for a pass (and then the pass has to cross the LOS)

Interestingly enough, both Hayes and Steratore were SJs duding the regular season (McGinn and Snodgrass crews, respectively). Then again, deep wings are pretty interchangeable, so I guess it's really not that interesting. This game had 2 SJs and no FJs and the Alamo Bowl had 2 FJs and no SJs

Good game by the crew. The game was over early in the second half, but the crew worked hard all game.
3.85s across the board.
