The FBS conference commissioners need to work to use neutral conference officials for non-conference games outside of the opening weekend showcase games.
For instance, I do not like SEC officials will be calling the LSU-Texas game in Austin in September, and Big 12 officials will be in Baton Rouge in 2020 when the Longhorns make the return trip. LSU and Texas should take the lead on this and ask one of the other three P5 conferences (ACC, Big 10, Pac-12) to assign those games. If Greg Sankey and/or Bob Bowlsby have their feelings hurt, tough. But it would be better for all involved.
I don't believe in going back to split crews. No way. That was awful. While officials are supposed to be neutral and there is usually no problem when the visiting conference supplies the officials, if it were neutral conferences all the time, all hints of impropriety would be removed for good.
Thoughts?

It used to be that there were mixed crews from each conference, four from the home conference, three from the visiting conference.
Some schools insist on neutral crews. For years, the Big 10 sent a crew to officiate the Louisville - Kentucky game because neither school could agree.
I'm OK with the visiting conference supplying officials.
But, with so many people searching for non-existent conspiracy theories these days, neutral crews for Power 5 non-conference matchups might be the way to go.

by saying this, your inference is that one or both officiating conference crews could not be unbiased in a game in which the traveling officials work. Either way, its a bit of a slap to the credibility and integrity of the officials. Just sayin...

Visiting team officials are very able to be unbiased. I think the Vinovich crew was unbiased even though four of them lived in CA.
In this day and age, officiating assignors may want to avoid playing into at least one stupid conspiracy theory. If given a second chance, I'm sure Riveron would have flipped the conference championship crews...even though both crews are above reproach no matter where they call a game.
