This is one of my favorite threads to do every year. It is time for the NCAA Tournament. This thread will be used to keep track of all Officiating assignments and is open for discussion.

One thing I am interested to see is if any of the veterans who missed the tournament the last couple of years will be returning. I will especially be on the lookout for Ted Valentine, Joe DeRosa, Tom Eades, Les Jones, Brian Dorsey, Olandis Poole, Mike Nance, Mike Scyphers. I doubt all of them will return but I would expect to see two to four of them at least return.

Really enjoy this thread too, thanks for compiling every year.
Looks like you didn't have to wait long on Brian Dorsey, he's working the first First Four game tonight in Dayton.

I would be very surprised if Ted Valentine doesn't return to the tournament. He worked the championship game of the ACC Tournament for the second time in three years, so I would think that it would be almost impossible to keep him out again.

The only way I see Valentine miss again is if JD Collins holds a grudge based on last year and Valentine going to the media. But my guess would be that he will be back.

I hope those officials return.
You never know.
When John Adams became the supervisor of officials for the tournament, big-time veterans such as Tim Higgins, Ed Hightower, Steve Welmer, and others were one and done instead of working Sweet 16-plus.
When JD Collins came along, for whatever reason, DeRosa, Valentine and Steratore were one and done or got nothing instead of working the second weekend like usual.
Basketball officiating is very political at times.

When JD Collins came along, for whatever reason, DeRosa, Valentine and Steratore were one and done or got nothing instead of working the second weekend like usual. Basketball officiating is very political at times. I will be fair to Collins re: Valentine and Steratore. Valentine actually seemed to improve his standing once Collins took over by working the 2016 Sweet 16 and 2017 Final 4. Before his 2016 Sweet 16 he hadn't worked past the second round since 2012. Steratore was actually preferred by Collins as he didn't work past the first round until Collins got into his position. DeRosa, Tom Eades, Pat Adams, Jamie Luckie, Karl Hess, Les Jones, Tony Greene, David Hall and Antinio Petty among others are some Officials who have definitely been put on the backburner by Collins. Some of them went from working Sweet 16/Elite 8 to just 1 game, others went from perennial Final 4 to Sweet 16 at best. Again I will be fair to Collins and say some of them have definitely decreased in skillset but even so the drastic downfalls are a little sketchy.

Jury is still out on Collins. We should still be fair to him.
I thought Steratore was one and done last year.
Forgot Valentine was a rumor in the tournament under Adams. I seem to remember Adams being a little Darrell Garretson-ish.

I seem to remember Adams being a little Darrell Garretson-ish. Gene was one and done last year but worked the Sweet 16 in 2016 and 2017 under Collins, he never made it past the first round with Adams. Adams definitely was more drastic in his changes but Collins is more strict during the actual tournament. If there is any sort of error the entire crew doesn't move on no matter how good of a season or how good of a Referee you are. Happened to John Higgins and Dog Shows last year, Pat Driscoll, Jeff Clark and Chris Rastatter the year before. That never happened under Adams.

Just curious, what do you use to determine the three conferences for each official? I assume it's the amount of games worked in each and could guess many of them but wasn't sure where it was tracked.

Just curious, what do you use to determine the three conferences for each official? I assume it's the amount of games worked in each and could guess many of them but wasn't sure where it was tracked. Great question. The three conferences listed for each Official are indeed the 3 conferences each Official worked the most throughout the season. I get the information from the below website. It lists every game that each Official worked this season. I will warn you that it costs a small amount of money to gain access to each refs schedule but to me it is worth it. The website has a bunch of other great resources as well. www.phillyref.com/basketball/d1/d1refs.html#
