I think the PAC 12 is going to have a difficult time trying to get officials from other parts of the country to join them. Pullman Washington and Corvallis and Eugene Oregon probably aren't the easiest places to get to by air. A pay raise and a chacne to be a Referee in a Power 5 Conference could convince a few, but I agree it is a tough sell. MWC could be a little easier as quite a few of those teams play in Pac-12 territory. Mike Cuttone should be targeted as he has been a solid Referee in the MWC and lives in California. But he came up in the MWC and Big 12 and could be in line to become a Big 12 Referee soon. Tim Davis is another option and he lives in Washington. Those would be great places to start. Tim Davis lives in Dallas-Fort Worth

Post-publication, I found out there is another on-field official that retired from the Pac-12, but did not get a name yet. So other than the 5 white hats (including Wharrie), there's Rod Ammari going to Big Ten, Dale Keller to the NFL, and the unnamed non-referee retirement.
Also heard that the Pac-12 wants to staff up to an 8th crew, but that seems to be a bit ambitious the way things are now.
I honestly don't know how potential recruits will weigh the lure of working a Power 5 conference against the strong undercurrent of discontent that is well known to outsiders. It might pull in officials who see this as a stepping stone to the ACC, SEC or the Bigs, which is very weird to even think that. I'm also astonished how weak the Pac-12 is in terms of conference alliances, and that there is no natural pipeline.
Coleman has been like Teflon, but I don't know how this is survivable.

Sounds like Cannon's Replacement is Coyte. Villar demoted back to Umpire and Wharrie as a CJ. Hoped to have seen Banks as the new white hat instead. Or will there be an increase the number of Big 10 crews and Banks still given a shot this year as a white hat.

I'm sure he knew it was back to the black hat when he went. Telling that he wants a stable conference at black hat instead of an unknown future at white hat.

Or he could be looking at the fact that NFL has hired a bunch of FBS white hats and, knowing they are in the pipeline, wants to demonstrate that he is a top U. Paganelli, Michalek, etc. are not getting any younger and if any of these U’s move to R that will open up spots.

John Canzano reported during the 2022 season that this could happen, and his sources were correct. www.johncanzano.com/p/canzano-big-ten-coming-for-pac-12It’s worth noting that the Pac-12 is still trying to piece together a media deal. ESPN doesn’t want to overpay. CBS, FOX, and NBC are reportedly not interested. So the conference seems likely to end up with some combination of ESPN, Amazon, and Apple, reducing visibility even further and potentially bringing in far less revenue than the Big 12. Ironically, many of the same experts and pundits predicting the Pac-12’s demise also said the same about the Big 12 when Oklahoma and Texas announced their intention to leave. But the Big 12 landed a great media rights deal anyway, while the Pac-12 is reportedly so desperate that names like Ion and the CW have been thrown into the mix. The Big 12 has made no secret about wanting to add Pacific Time Zone members, and while the Pac-12 presidents have publicly committed to the league, you know they are quietly weighing their options and seeing how the money plays out in these negotiations. If another four schools eventually leave—and I hope not—it’s hard to see the Pac-12 surviving. So it’s easy to understand why some of the league’s top officials might not want to stick around to see what happens—especially if the conference with the most leverage all of a sudden comes calling.

Wow ... I missed this, but it aligns with what I was hearing. Same recurring themes, other than that Coleman is "well-liked"

There was talk at camp this year over drinks that the BIG was adding a new crew along with a promotion. So that might be why we saw Coyte, Villar and Wharrie all working together. Couple that with either Banks or Knueppel getting promoted.
Did anyone recognize the crew at the Wisconsin spring game?

I'm peeling the onion and there are multiple factors leading to a perfect storm of conference jumping this year. Lots of movement underway.

I never thought the day would come where the transfer portal would hit the officiating ranks but alas, here we are!

A few conferences will be getting new Referees this fall. Who will take their spots? Big Ten - Mike Cannon retired. I expect Bryan Banks to get the white hat, though Kole Knueppel and Amanda Sauer-Cook wouldn’t surprise me. Big 12 - Scott Campbell joined the NFL. (I believe Mike Vandervelde is now the senior Referee in the conference after several years of departures.) Mike Cuttone or Cal McNeill would be next in line from the MWC, but I have a feeling it might be Christian Watson. Pac-12 - Michael Mothershed retired. Jim Wharrie seems like the logical choice, as he’s worked a few games as Referee. Jason Gant is also possible. SEC - James Carter joined the NFL. Perhaps a Sun Belt Referee gets his slot? What do you think? And, are there any other changes not mentioned here? The one other ref that is experienced in the Big 12 besides Vandervelde is David Alvarez, who is top-notch. In terms of the mass exodus of pac-12 refs, I would not be surprised if the CFP does not have Pac-12 refs anymore for New Years Six games. Back in 2013-14, the conference was left out of BCS assignments, and until there is a new top-notch guy in the conference that inspires confidence like Coyte, Strimling, Mothershed, and going back Land Clark and Terry Leyden, why give a conference a top NY6 / Playoff bowl that has this manny issues?
