Our historians of 1970s officiating rosters can weigh in, but I believe there were other candiates for referee that the front office wanted in and possibly Wedge's work was not up to par. Jerry Seeman replaced Wedge as Referee in 1979, and believe it or not, was the alternate referee at Super Bowl 14 -- his first year in at the position!

I love the four pumps on the DPI call and the "touch the ground" bend at the waist on the offsetting fouls. Just goes to show how mechanics evolve.
