I also think that Garth over reacted.

Has anyone been in the middle of a very stressful situation, adrenaline in overdrive, trying to do your job, and someone shoves you? What do you think your first reaction would be - stand there in dignified grace and ask that person to remove themselves from the premises? If that is your first reaction, you are a better person than me.
Don't worry, Quirk got a game check for breaking up a scuffle by pulling a player to the ground, I predict DeFelice will get spanked in some way by the league.

I can say that I've seen similar acts that weren't flagged. That was a "heat of the moment" situation, but once DeFelice threw his flag, they had no choice but to toss him.

The NFL rule book calls for automatic disqualificaiton for "striking or purposely shoving a game official." If there's a penalty for it, then he must be ejected. There's no wiggle room. I agree that maybe DeFelice could have let that one go. For some reason, that really pushed his buttons. He was mad and you could see it. Good thing the LJ got in there and got Smith out of there. DeFelice needed to calm down a bit. I have to say that this play highlights a complaint I have about Cheffers. I've never been a fan of his mic work. In this instance, he called the penalty a "Personal Foul" when it is actually "Unsportsmanlike Conduct." Yes I know that's a matter of semantics, but I always get the vibe that Cheffers is unsure of himself on the mic, and this is just an example. He's a great official, and I'm not criticizing that aspect of him, just his persona I guess. This was actually Clete Blakeman on the announcement though. i looked at the video again and DeFelice did give Smith a retaliation shove. I love Garth DeFelice and think he is a great Umpire but he should be fined a game check for this action. If players can't do that to Officials Officials shouldn't be able to do that to players either. I think DeFeice just lost his cool in this instance, then again so do most players when they get ejected and they have to pay the price. DeFelice should also. You mean like Jim Quirk in 2007?

I don't know how after watching this on tv, and on this replay you could say DeFelice over reacted, the NFL is all about fair play, and safety of its players here. Yeah, he probably had a look in his eye, who wouldn't, after being shoved like that?? Smith, was just plain stupid in his behavior in going after his opponent after being separated by the official. There is no way, something like this isn't going unnoticed and just blow it off, Garth DeFelice ought to be commended, not fined. You can't touch an official or shove one either, Ask Steve Tasker about that...

Yes, this action cost Jim Quirk a game check after the Packer in question later said that, while initially mad, he hoped Quirk wouldn't get punished.

I don't think either incident by these umpires are even remotely close or comparable, Justin Smith will get to make a nice donation to charity.

I too hope that the NFL does nothing to DeFelice, but I'm sure that Justin Smith will try to say DeFelice over-reacted in appealing any punishment.

I am sure Justin Smith will cry about it too...He needs to put his big boy pants on and get over it, and find his check book here.

If that is your first reaction, you are a better person than me. A reaction is action without thought - they tend to lead to more trouble. I don't think DeFelice overreacted; he was trying to squelch a chippy moment and #94 was overchippy. You don't touch the stripes!

The correct call was made, but I think Garth DeFelice could have handled the situation better. I know the situation is tense, but you have other officials there for a reason, walk away
Some of the worse behavior of coaches/spectators I have seen is at youth soccer games that I officiated when I was in junior high/high school. A crazed parent who thinks their kid is the next Pele can be quite dangerous. I had one occasion where it actually took multiple coaches/parents to intervene after I had to toss a parent from the sideline after he said the magic words (after I had been consistently warning the sideline to keep it down for the greater part of the game - a rainstorm had come in the previous night and the field had not been completely remarked so there were a lot of disputes over whether the ball had gone out of bounds although I did my best to make sure that the outside edge of my foot was on the sideline so if I could see the ball completely cross my foot I knew it was out of bounds). Fortunately that was the only time I have ever had to eject somebody and I was happy to hear from the guy who ran the officiating, after he got my report of the incident as well as that of the head coach of the team whose player's parent I had ejected, that I had made the right call

Blakeman...Cheffers...
OK, OK. Maybe I shouldn't make posts with a severe sinus infection and full of medications. So just pretend I didn't say all of that.

All in all, I thought the crew did a pretty good job. I'll give everyone an A, and DeFelice a B because he could have handled the Justin Smith situation a little better.
