Woldn't you hate to be on umpire in Davidson's crew?

I agree those were plays I would have have not called a strike and left it to an appeal with the base umpire.
Sorry to say Bob Davidson seems to always find controversy.

Bill Hohn had two wild ejections in 2009 when he ruled swinging strike on a very close play and didn't allow for an appeal. It seems like that was the motif of Davidson's scrap the other night.

Any update on Bill Hohn for the 2011 Season..... Another source said that he's on the DL right now. Not sure whether or not he'll come back.

Angel Hernandez is on the board. We can't tell what was specifically said or done to cause the toss, but Hernandez didn't go looking for a screaming match after he gave black the hook. Hernandez has started to mellow out over the last two or three years...... atmlb.com/hhRUSJ

I live in SD... watch lots of their games. They have had a rough homestand from an umpiring perspective. Several calls replay has confirmed were incorrect. I guess Buddy is just getting frustrated. The team is not playing all that well and combined with bad calls... even the mellowest of managers is gonna crack at some point.

Regarding the check swing issue, once the plate umpire calls strike, there are no appeals allowed. Only the defense may ak for an appeal. Also, there is nothing in the rulebook that defines a check swing. This is something I would like to see changed.

OUTSTANDING call! Dana Demuth flew under the radar for many years in the NL (overshadowed by Harvey, Froemming, Pulli, Wendelstedt, etc.), so I never really paid much attention to his work. However, I have been VERY impressed with is work in the last five years or so. He also has a unique "big out" call. Most umpires go over the top and make a downward punching motion. Demuth does it in reverse!

That was a great call by DeMuth. I also like the fact that he didn't get hot under the collar when Showalter came out of the dugout to argue the call. Some umpires would have baited him into an argument and then tossed him.

Another great call during a play at the plate yesterday, this time by Young Umpire Adrian Johnson. Even though the throw beat him by a lot, he was defineately safe. Good job by Johnson not to give up on the call just because the throw was there in time. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=13790645

It was a close play, but the tag came after C. Mcgehee stepped on the plate.

Hope he's OK. It's a wonder this doesn't happen more with all the line drives hit toward first and third base.
