He looked like he was in major pain. I'd bet he has a least a very bad bruise. I hope he didn't suffer any cracked bones.

Vic Carapazza takes Layne's place.

Len Kasper reported that Jerry Layne's X-rays were negative. Jerry will apparently miss a week or two, though. Jerry Meals replaced Layne behind the plate last night in Denver.

With Jerry Meals switched to this crew in his abscence, will he assume the role of Crew Chief?

With Jerry Meals switched to this crew in his abscence, will he assume the role of Crew Chief? Meals might be taking over crew chief duties. I think there's a good chance that he's one of the umpires who are next in line for a promotion to crew chief, so MLB is probably giving him a shot. Bob Davidson is also on that crew and I PRAY that it isn't him...

The only reason Meals was added to this crew is because Vic Carapazza is replacing Brian Knight this week and they didn't want to have two triple A umps on the same crew.

That was as close to a tie as you'll ever see. Had Johnson said he was out, it would be hard to argue.

Ron Gardenhire dismissed by Chris Guccione: mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=13926143Gardenhire seems to be inheriting the mantel from Bobby Cox. I have been impressed with the umpires in the last few years regarding their actions after ejecting a player or manager. Many times the umpire listens and responds quietly. You rarely see the screaming matches that punctuated umpire/manager confrontations in the 1970s and 1980s.

Francona had a legitimate gripe. The pitcher moved toward the plate and then threw to first. Mike DiMuro was the 1st base umpire so he probably had the best look at it.
