It's interesting to surf hockey fights on You Tube and note how games were officiated by Dave Newell wearing number 5 or number 6.
Golden age of officiating in late 60's were Vern Buffey #1, John Ashley #2, Art Skov #3, Bill Friday #4, Bruce Hood #5 and Dave Newell #6....Next wave included I believe Ron Wicks, Wally Harris, Lloyd Gilmour, Bryan Lewis, Bob Myers, Denis Morel.

Well what you have to remember, of course, is that the NHL was a six team affair until the start of the 1967-68 season when they expanded and doubled in size to 12 teams. Throughout the early part of the 60's, you had at most 3 games a night and they had 5 referees...#1 Frank Udvari, #2 Vern Buffey, #3 John Ashley, #4 Art Skov and #5 Bill Friday. These guys also worked a few games each season in the AHL. The next wave, wass indeed working games in the AHL. I knew Ron Wicks who had been a linesman in the NHL in the very early 60's but had never seen any of the other guys work (I was living in NY and went to Rangers games). There were 3 full time linesman..#7 Matt Pavelich, #8 Neil Armstrong and #9 John D'Amico. Another linesman of that era was a fellow named George Hayes who was the best at breaking up fights there ever was but resigned rather than be forced to take an eye test. There were also several other part time linesman who worked some regional games..thus Walt Aanas #19 only worked games in NY and Boston, #17 Bob Frampton only worked games in Boston, Montreal or NY, there was another fellow named Bill Morrison, I think, who worked mid west games but we never saw him in NY.
In any event, during the 1966-67 season, they began working in some of the yunger fellows in preparation for the impending expansion. We would get an odd game with Bruce Hood, Bob Sloan, Wally Harris. Lloyd Gilmour was a referee in the Western Hockey League and since there would now be NHL games on the West coast, he joined the league and concentrated mostly the first expansion year on west coast games.
They did pull it off!
