detroit.tigers.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=13867701Pretty odd to say the least, but even I as as a SOFTBALL ump knew immediately it was a balk - wonder why vets like Hirschbeck, Bell and Laz Diaz had to consult on that one? Oh, funny thing is that in softball, that would have been an illegal pitch, and the batter WOULD have gotten 1B, as an IP in softball is a DELAYED dead ball, so when the batter got hit, it would have counted as a HBP, as the R on 1B would have been forced to 2B with the HBP. If there had been a runner on third, the manager would the option of taking the IP call, as that runner on 3rd would have scored.

As a fellow softball umpire I concur with your ruling!
I think that was such a strange call that the umpires were taken aback and were probably thinking, "What in the (world) was that?!?!" and then had to take a few moments to sort it out.

They were as astonished as we were with what happened on that play. It looked almost like Verlander suffered brain freeze...at least the umpires talked it over and got it right.
