Bowl season is off to a rip roaring start as #50 for Wyoming is ejected from the New Mexico Bowl by the Big East crew.

Wyoming players are getting whipped and taking out their frustrations after the whistle. Unfortunately it is starting to rain flags - all justified.

I've got Ohio and Utah State on TSN2 in the "Famous" Idaho Potato Bowl.
Utah State just hit a FG to go up 5-0, but there's a flag on the play. It was for hands to the face, half the distance, an a 1st down. So takes those points off the board. It's back to 2-0.

I've got Ohio and Utah State on TSN2 in the "Famous" Idaho Potato Bowl. Didn't this used to be the Humanitarian Bowl? Like the Chick-Fil-A Bowl used to be the Peach Bowl?

Potato Bowl catastrophes...
The last minute replay debacle was bad. The 4th down fumble rule snafu was not a factor in the play for the main reason that there was no fumble. The referees announcement that "...the boy was down..." made things worse. I couldn't believe what I was watching and hearing so I reviewed the DVR of the whole scenario. After the crew got the replay mess straightened out and gave Ohio the ball inside the 1 yard line, another officiating disaster occurred on the next play. Ohio is lined up and the game clock, correctly, is running. The right tackle obviously flinches, but no false start is called. This should have been an easy call. The penalty would have put Ohio back at the 5 1/2 and Utah State would have taken the 10 second runoff and the clock would have started again on the ready. It looks like the replay confusion took these guys out of their concentration. Missing that false start was a game impacting call....ouch! You can call a great game for 59 minutes, but screw up in the last seconds, and the entire effort can be ruined.

I know I am a few days behind on this. Did anyone see this "illegal skimming" call on the last play of the New Orleans bowl? Never seen or head of this. Can anyone enlighten me?

Potato bowl - Couldnt agree with 75er any more! I dont blame the replay booth at all - the on field guys had this completely screwed up by not understanding the 4th down fumble rule in the first place. That player (not boy) was clearly down before he fumbled anyway. A Division 1 crew should not miss a call like that if they are doing their job correctly. I saw the flinch as well - clearly should have been called by Referee and possibly HL - but obviously Referee was still running the previous debacle threw his mind.
Lets hope we can all use this a teaching moment.

It's called "stemming" and not "skimming". Stemming is umpire-speak for a non-football move that a defender might try to bait the offense into a false start. I think the term is used in the NFL, but when the R announces that term, without an better explanation for the fans and TV, he really hasn't done a good job with the microphone. An Ed Hochuli-type description would have been appropriate for whatever the foul call was against the defense.

In the NFL you would probably hear it called "Illegally simulating the snap count"

ESPN has Scott McElwee in the booth for the independence bowl. He gave really good insight on an interception review during the 2nd quarter.

Sloppy game so far in Texas. Northwestern and Texas A&M have been committing a lot of penalties.....
