Shawn Hochuli just redeemed himself with a nice DPI call which you rarely see the officials throw even though it is in the rules

Did Corrente already dump the earpiece? I heard Corrente was hit when he had the Mic on the 1st time and cut himself... There was a 2nd time(preseason Chargers VS 49ers) where a Def Player hit him.... and after that I think he decided to tuck it into his shirt.

Forgive me, but I honestly haven't paid much attention to the pre-season: In a replay situation, even with Mr. Blandino personally providing input to the Referee, who has the final say? If Dean sided one way, but the on-field Referee was convinced otherwise, is he bound by Dean's observations, or is he free to rule differently (aside from the almost-certain downgrade in such an instance) ?

Final call with the referee. Blandino and Riveron are there to provide consultation.

However, if you receive advice from management, and decide you actually have a different interpretation, it is certainly at your peril.
It also is a guarantee you won't get dinged if you listen to the boss

After seeing a number of very questionable illegal contact calls bailing out teams on 3rd and a Century I wonder if the NFL would consider removing automatic first down from that penalty. Defensive holding, DPI, hands to the face keep it but the penalty for grazing a receiver 6 yards down the field in a direction the QB was not even looking should not be an automatic first down

Defensive holding and illegal use of hands are hard to gauge as to their effect on a play. Perhaps the taking off of the automatic first down is a good idea.

Defensive holding you actually have to grab a player so I have no problem with keeping an automatic first down, but illegal contact can be as simple as having a hand on the back of the receiver (not even altering the player's route or impeding the ability to catch the ball) 5 1/4 yards past the Line of Scrimmage. My problem is that that yields an automatic first down

Question...if your boss tells you to do something a certain way and you tell him you think your way is better, how long are you going to last in that job? If DB or AR tell you they think the call should be whatever, you have to be out of your mind not to go along. Of course we don't know exactly how much pressure is brought to bear on the referee. I still would prefer if the whole thing were done properly and turned over to one person in NY to get the same consistancy for every call the way it is done in the NHL which has by far, and there isn't even a close second, the best replay system in sports.

Brad Allen really looks like he belongs. Poised, calm, no nerves. The only different is the size of the stripes and the shield on the hat. EDIT: And on top of it all, his first game is OT. He nailed the OT rules and handled the coin toss like an old pro. I agree 100%. Allen looked like a 10 year vet out there today. I'm sure bumps will come up for him but he had a very impressive debut. Ron Who? Imagine what a field day Winter would have had with these new rules interpretations. At least Al Michaels would say so if he were working an NBC game.

I thought Allen had a good game, but his crew? Meh... I didn't like the picked up flag for offensive holding in the 4th quarter against the Bears and I felt like there were a number of "make up" calls in favor of Buffalo going down the stretch - looked like there should have been a few illegal contact flags thrown. Anyone get an explanation why this flag was picked up? I don't think TV showed a decent replay of the hold in question.

There isn't a replay of the foul in question because it never happened. So why was there a flag thrown on the play? There have been times I've thrown my penalty flag and as it flutters through the air I think, "Why did I throw that?" It is possible the official threw a flag, then replayed it in his mind, then talked himself out of the flag.
