Usually, the conference championship officials are NOT the best officials in the league that year. . Most incorrect statement ever... If you are right (the best officials in the season get the conference title games) then I can understand why. But it is undeniable that after the performances in the conference title games are brought into consideration, the best officials get the New Years Six, the playoff and the championship.

From WK #12 2018 Stanford VS California Referee - Steve Strimling >>> Rescheduled Dec 1, 2018 Any idea if any of Strimling's regular crew will be working the Championship game instead?

I think I mostly agree with Penn State Fan on this one. I would say NY6 is for the top Official at each position in each conference with some caveats. Conferences usually like to get 1 or 2 Officials work their first NY6 game every season. So 1 Official who has never worked a NY6 game might have a grade that is similar but slightly lower to NY6/BCS veteran. In a situation like that they might give the game to the NY6 rookie even if his grade was slightly worse. But generally the top ranked Official in each conference tends to work NY6.

In a situation like that they might give the game to the NY6 rookie even if his grade was slightly worse. But generally the top ranked Official in each conference tends to work NY6. I would guess that the highest rated refs still get the playoff and single assignments. So if there is only one SEC (random conference for a example) ref officiating a New Years Six bowl, they would give it to the best referee, regardless of how many NY6 bowls they have reffed. But you could be right in the case that if 2 SEC refs will call the NY6, they would give one game to the best ref and maybe put a first timer in over a ref with a higher grade for the second bowl who already got a NY6. I guarentee, however, that single assignments are earned. So they did not give Jeff Heaser the Rose bowl last year (only Acc ref in NY6) and Greg Burks the 2015 championship because they did not work big games, but because they earned it. They probably however gave Brandon Cruse the Peach Bowl last year over say, Reggie Smith, because of him being new.
