Why is Ron Groover the Crew Chief when Michael Stephens and Terry Wymer both have multiple National Championships?

Why is Ron Groover the Crew Chief when Michael Stephens and Terry Wymer both have multiple National Championships? I'm pretty sure Stephens was the Crew Chief. Groover just did the jump ball because Stephens never does the jump ball.

I think Groover was the Crew Chief because he inbounded the ball to start the second half. Regardless, outstanding job by the crew. They were as good as the game was.

I agree, the crew was outstanding. I do not think it is a stretch to call Michael Stephens and Terry Wymer the two best Officials in College Basketball right now. Stephens has worked 6 straight Final 4's and 4 of the last 5 Championship Games. Wymer has worked 3 of the last 4 Championship games. For awhile Verne Harris and John Higgins were probably the top 2 Officials but I would say Stephens and Wymer have overtaken them.

Stephens did the jump ball in his 3 previous national title games, so the more likely reason is that since this was Groover's 1st national championship, it was agreed to let the new guy have the honor.

You are right re:the jump balls in previous Championship games however in the regular season and all rounds besides the Final 4/national Championship he does not do the tip. There are some CC's who do not like doing the tip (Stephens, Verne Harris, Randy McCall, Mike Roberts, James Breeding) for whatever reason. In this game I do now believe Groover was the CC due to what Howard said, that he inbounded the ball in the second half.

Apologies Russ; I was just going off of the limited NCAA that I watch...which is the tournament.
Also, kudos and many thanks for doing this annually.

The answer to your question is, who cares? Groover is an outstanding official and a F4 veteran. At that level there's not much that separates the top guys. Why shouldn't he be the R? Because it's his first title game? That's ridiculous. And I guarantee you Wymer and Stephens lost no sleep over it. In basketball, especially at that level, once the ball goes up everyone is an R. Even during the regular season Wymer is regularly the U1 or U2. It really doesn't mean anything. Maybe you should take your concern on this matter to JD Collins. You are clearly the only one losing sleep over what is an insignificant designation. Basketball is not football.
