I am not familiar with James Carter's work. Is this the first time he's done the SEC championship game? Yes, this is his first SEC Championship, at least at referee. He was promoted, I believe, to replace Tom Ritter when he retired in 14-15. This is Carter's 4th year as an SEC Referee. He was actually in the ODP in 2017 and 2018 but was not in it this most recent season. Pretty surprising to see him get the SEC Championship as he has not generally worked the top SEC games and has only worked one Bowl Game as a White Hat but I thought he did a good job.

Happy for Johnson to get the championship game. He’s been solid since entering the ACC in 2013. Wouldn’t be shocked if he gets a New Years six game as well. Only had one bad game all year in my opinion. Solid referee. I don't think he'll get a NY6 game because in the ACC you usually don't double dip with the Conference Championship and a Bowl Game, it is one or the other. So Johnson and all others who worked the ACC Championship are most likely done.

Unless he gets a NY6 Bowl, this is Dan Capron's final game. I would predict he get a bowl game. Best referee in College football. What a shame that he is retiring.

My guess would be Mike Mothershed Mothershed does not inspire confidence. Yeah, but he’s the best in the pac-12

Does the PAC-12 double dip? I’d love to see Steve Strimling get the natty, but I don’t know what their policy is. What’s the criticism of Michael Mothershed? I have always thought of him as a good ref, but I’m a lay viewer.
Anyone think Rogers Redding will wait until after the semifinals in order to use a crew from one of the other conferences?
For what it’s worth, I want to see Reggie Smith get the big game at some point. Not sure how others feel, but I’ve always liked him.

But I agree, him and Brandon Cruse are good refs, probably the top 2 behind Defee.

From my uninformed perspective, I also think Mothershed is the front-runner (had their NY6 game last year, plus the 2017 PAC-12 title game.) Also, I think (with some confidence) the BIG-10 gets the LSU-Oklahoma semifinal, and the BIG-12 works Ohio State-Clemson (though I'm not confident on this one.) As for names: LSU vs. Oklahoma: John O’Neill Ohio State vs. Clemson: Reggie Smith National Championship: Mike Mothershed

Pac-12 is hard to tell, they usually do double dip but last year only 2 of the 8 Officials did so you never really know. I would imagine it's either Strimling or Mothershed for the National Championship. ACC and SEC never double up, the Big 12 has in each of the first 2 years of their Conference Championship and the Big Ten and Pac-12 usually have some Officials work both the Championship and and a Bowl Game and some Officials who just work the Championship.
