Great umpire. Participated with Jim Joyce in that gutsy obstruction call in the 2013 World Series.
I'll miss him. I hope he has a happy retirement.

Congrats to Dana Demuth on a fantastic career. Was hired in 1983 and would go on to spend 36 seasons on the staff and have an extensive Playoff history as described above. Impressively he wroked his first and last World Series 20 seasons apart. To be as good as you were at anything 20 years later is extremely impressive.
But what stands out the most to me about Dana was you never heard a bad word about him anywhere. When there are so many complaints about guys like Joe West, Angel Henrandez, etc there is never a peep regarding Demuth. He just handled things a different way. I cannot recall an instance of him getting mad or being unprofessional in the slightest bit. There were rarely ever heated arguments with him. That's not to say how Joe West does things isn't effective but Demuth just had a different personality that everybody seemed to get along with. Enjoy retirement Dana, you absoultely earned it!!!

I'm mildly surprised that we haven't heard of more retirements. There are other umpires like Gerry Davis, Larry Vanover, Tom Hallion, Phil Cuzzi, Brian Gorman and Jerry Layne that all have ages that begin with 6.
Gorman was all but part-time last season, and Hallion and Layne missed time with concussions. I'm concerned for Hallion and Layne as both have missed time with concussions the last few seasons.
As long has his health holds out, Joe West won't retire until he surpasses Bill Klem's all-time games-worked record.
We might have some news during spring training, but usually the retirements are set in January.

They have built up a large number of retired, experienced umpires They can be put to work as replay officials. Get rid of the moronic challenge system and even more moronic headsets. Make them the fifth member of each crew in constant contact with Chelsea and the crew chief. How many calls in baseball are not clear as day? If they see something wrong, they immediately contact the crew chief and the issue in almost every case is quickly fixed. Much better than the current idiotic system which ultimately spawned video rooms and the whole Astros cheating scandal.

I can confirm that MLB has hired 5 umpires: Chris Segal, Nic Lentz, Ramon DeJesus, Ryan Blakney and Jansen Visconti.
