This reminds me of something I had heard years ago and I never knew if it was true or not. What I had heard was this. In the NFL, if you injure a player and a penalty is called on you for that action, like in this video, you may not play again until the player you injured is able to again play. In other words, if McMahon had been seriously injured and could not play for 6 weeks, Charles Martin would not be allowed to play for 6 weeks. Was that ever a thing?

No, this was never a thing in the NFL. But, many fans I wish it were so.

I have heard (but not confirmed) that it was Markbreit's first officiated game in Chicago as a referee, since he is a native, and it was due to Fred Silva missing some games to to heart problems. A fact is that Chuck Heberling, a Pittsburgh native, was brought back from retirement and worked the Packers-Steelers game at Three Rivers Stadium three weeks earlier, and it was his only Steelers game in his 14 years as a referee.

Silva missed some time, so that may have jumbled assignments up; however, this was Markbreit's regular crew.

Markbreit did work a couple of preseason games in Chicago, but this was the only regular season game.
