Watching old highlights from the 70s and 80s, something I am amazed of Dreith is how close he positioned himself to the quarterback. And he was mobile enough to get behind the action. I dont think any other referee at that time had that ability.

I dont think any other referee at that time had that ability. Haggerty and early Markbreit got that close - no more than five yards behind the backs. When the QB dropped back to pass, they backpedaled with the QB. But, Dreith was cocked at such an angle that he kind of ran sideways when he dropped back. It was a quite noticeable. Fred Wyant and Fred Silva both lined up quite deep. McNally seemed to let the officials work where they were comfortable, as long as they watched their keys. That seemed to go away with Seeman. And it really went away with Pereira who wanted the referees to line up deep and wide.
