Post all umpiring news, information, videos, calls here. We begin with the spring training crew. Biggest news. Tom Hallion has NOT retired and is on the roster again this year. Only speculation, but I wonder if some unexpected retirements brought about too much turnover and MLB asked (or payed an incentive) for him to return for one more year. www.closecallsports.com/2022/03/2022-mlb-spring-training-umpire-roster.html

Hope Nauert and Emmel can take the field this year.
Emmel has been gone a long time.

MLB's ass would've been in the jackpot had Hallion insisted on retirement. Looking at some of those crews, it will be obvious fairly quickly as to which AAA call-ups are likely to be hired next. Several of those crews, because of injury or necessary reshuffle, will be mostly 3 full-time + AAA.

Couple of quibbles with some placements. Unless Sam Holbrook is expected to be out for an extended period of time he has a rather senior crew as all are deserving to be one spot higher than they are. I am also wondering if Brian O’Nora is going to be the primary “rover” CC because Fairchild and Gibson are among the longest tenured at their spots and those with greater seniority are on crews with umpires expected to miss time. Considering the injury history of Jerry Layne I may have swapped Conroy with Hamari unless the former was a request by Kulpa. If that was the case you could have had Brian Knight as his U3.

Considering the injury history of Jerry Layne I may have swapped Conroy with Hamari unless the former was a request by Kulpa. If that was the case you could have had Brian Knight as his U3. Conroy might have been a Kulpa request, as the two worked together this past World Series. It wouldn't shock me, especially if he received a heads up that he was getting Foster, who's become somewhat injury prone recently & frankly is a weak 2. Studying these crews more, there really is not a lot of wiggle room if a CC, who is often healthy, gets injured. I could only envision Bucknor, O'Nora, or Randazzo bolting their crew to fill-in elsewhere, as the 3's on those crews could easily handle the responsibility of a 2. Possibly Eddings, Timmons, or Guccione if it got ridiculous, but either the 3 isn't strong or the 4 is fairly new. I'm not going to say these are bad crews, they're fairly well balanced on paper, but they're a couple of concussions away from chaos.

I had been wondering about that. In my opinion, this is long overdue. No more having to guess what is being reviewed.

Mark Carlson with the first ejection of the season.
Francisco Lindor HBP. Fourth Met hit in two days.
Benches clear and a mild mosh pit. Pitcher and third base coach ejected for (apparent) unsporting actions during said mosh pit.
Stay tuned to the end for analysis from retired umpire Brian Gorman.
