Bill Haller, AL umpire has passed away. www.wjol.com/former-major-league-umpire-and-native-of-lockport-dies/ In their books, Ron Luciano, Ken Kaiser, Dave Phillips and Al Clark all spoke highly of Haller's skills and leadership. Haller retired after the 1982 World Series at age 48, saying his skills had eroded and he didn't want to embarrass himself. His last plate job was Game 2 of that series. After retiring, he worked as an AL supervisor, but was apparently let go because he was too critical of the AL umpires. Another factor was him refusing to work the 1984 post-season when the regular staff went on strike. www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1985-11-17-8503190599-story.htmlHaller and Earl Weaver didn't like each other. At all. YouTube Bill Haller and Earl Weaver and you will get a mic'd up, NSFW mic'd up argument between the two.

In 1972, there was a game where Bill was the home plate umpire and his brother Tom was catching for the Tigers. Bill was pulled from Tiger games after Earl Weaver complained. Bill was one of the most respected umpires of his day. RIP.
