Mike VanderVelde worked the Rose Bowl last year. Is there any precedent for a Referee getting a conference’s NY6 assignment two years in a row? It happens quite a bit although you don't usually see it with the same game. The fact that it is a semifinal is the reason I am going with VanderVelde. I think in the semifinals you truly want your top ranked guys at each position even if some of them just worked that same game last year. While not a Referee I distinctly remember Tyrone Anderson worked both the 2016 and 2017 Rose Bowl's as a CJ. 2016 it was just a NY6 game and in 2017 it was a semifinal. The 2017 and 2018 Cotton Bowl had 7 of the 8 same Officials with the only change being David Smith at Referee in 2017 and Matt Austin in 2018. 2107 it was not a semi and 2018 it was. Frank Villar and Kevin Kieser also worked the 2017 and 2018 Sugar Bowl. As for a Referee getting a Conference's BY6 Assignment 2 years in a row it has happened countless times. Flanagan in both 2014/2015 and 2019/2020, Mullins in 2018 and 2019, Coyte in 2019 and 2020, Clark in 2016 and 2017, Snodgrass 2021 and 2022, Capron 2016 and 2017, Autrey and Marlowe in 2021 and 2022, Cruse 2019 and 2020, Defee 2016, 2017 and 2018. Clark even worked the semi's in both 2016 and 2017 and Capron worked Semi's in 2016 and National Championship in 2017. Thank you, Russ! This is very interesting and very well explained. I really appreciate it.

Jeff Flanagan is listed as the A in the LA Bowl next Saturday. Does that knock him out of contention for the National Championship game?

Jeff Flanagan is listed as the A in the LA Bowl next Saturday. Does that knock him out of contention for the National Championship game? Not necessarily, as the game is one of the first ones. If the game was played after Christmas, then probably.

Alternates do not work on the field for any other bowl games. That’s unfortunate. Jeff Flanagan is a great Referee, and I think he would have done an excellent job on the National Championship Game. I am leaning toward Stuart Mullins now.

Patterson and Jerry Magallanes out. Looks like either Johnson or Mullins, unless Flanagan comes back.

Patterson and Jerry Magallanes out. Looks like either Johnson or Mullins, unless Flanagan comes back. Based on the other assignments there appears to be 6 Referees eligible for the NC but really only 2 or maybe 3 are legitimate candidates. Heaser- Just worked the game last year. Seems highly unlikely he would get the call back to back years Mullins- Definite candidate. Has worked NY6 in both 2018 and 2019 and works a Bowl Game pretty much every season Johnson- Definite candidate. Worked NY6 in 2016 and also works a Bowl Game pretty much every season, although his assignments tend to be some of the mid range to lower tier Bowl Games. Could still easily get this game though. Savoie- Worked the NC as a CJ in 2021. Could get it again as he is now at a new Position but I'm thinking not. Woods- Has never worked a Bowl Game as a Referee, I just don't see his first White Hat Bowl Assignment being the NC. Hedgepeth- Has never worked a Bowl Game. Highly unlikely he gets the NC

Bowl assignments for the early games post 7 days prior to kickoff of those games. The embargo for all bowls is lifted prior to the kickoff of the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

McCarthy seems to be the top ACC SJ year after year. I am surprised the NFL didn’t go after him sooner.

Looks like Marcus Woods gets the big assignment at the national championship this year.
