Craig Wrolstad's crew flags Kerby Joseph for a personal foul for pulling an opponent off of the pile. It appeared that Joseph took umbrage at the actions of a Rams player on the pile and yanked him away.
This rule is usually enforced during fumble scrums. When a player pulls an opponent off of a pile, it is a personal foul. While the officials may appreciate the muscle in peeling players off of the pile, the opponent being pulled off the pile is usually angry at the action.
This was an easy call for the officials.

Thoughts on the false start? Wrong call. Should have been an neutral zone infraction on the defense.

Agree with others saying Mello should have gotten offsides.

Thoughts on the false start? Wrong call. Should have been an neutral zone infraction on the defense. After further review: NFL officials are told to watch for offensive linemen twitching their hands or wiggling their fingers to entice a defensive offside or neutral zone infraction. Look at Decker closely. You see his left hand twitch. The NFL wants those twitches ruled as a false start on the offense. You may not like it, but that's the way the NFL wants it called, and Jim Mello and Mark Pellis called it correctly.

Matthew Stafford's pass to Demarcus Robinson is broken up by Aidan Hutchinson after a lot of contact.
Stafford threw it up into double coverage. Both Robinson and Hutchinson have a right to the ball. Both were looking for the ball.
Correct no-call.

R 4 Craig Wrolstad: 3.3 - Overall a good game, made sure clocks were right. Iffy hold but did well. U 131 Mark Pellis: 3.7 - People hate the false start on the Lions, but he had a good game. DJ 48 Jim Mello: 3.7 - See Pellis and congratulations on a great career. LJ 37 Tripp Sutter: 3.3 - could have thrown a helmet call, but overall a good game. FJ 60 Jeff Shears: 3.3 - See Sutter SJ 104 Dale Shaw: 3.5 - Had some tough calls in the secondary and did a good job. BJ 82 Jimmy Russell: 3.5 - Congratulations on a first playoff assignment. See Shaw.
Crew: 3.47 - Some controversies that were correct calls and a few that were incorrect. They did a good job but their calls are getting more chatter than they want.

So, at my peril, I posted a clip of the training tape. I was going to post it without sound, but my capture device didn't care that my speakers were muted. Oh well.
With that, I'm interested in the analysis of the forum on that false start.
