I agree with the league in suspending players (they shouldn't only threaten but do) for helmet-to-helmet hits to send a message that defenders need to use their equipment safely as well as protect the health of all players. However, it is bothersome that the league does not observe blows to the head/face with intention to hurt as an equal act. Assessing fines to Seymour, Finnigan, and Johnson's damaging actions on the field and not suspending them ignores the message Ray Anderson sent last month. These players’ actions were, "egregious", "flagrant", and "really disturbing". The league needs to meet players whose play is beyond aggressive with a higher level of aggression - It is time to sit those who flaunt the rules of the league, this is similar to giving a 5 year old a timeout. Pacifying the league as a player’s league is not working. The NFL needs to remember why the created their rules and now adhere to these rules.
Also, FredFan7, thank you for following up on my request to create a rubric/grading policy to apply to officials/crews. It creates a better understanding. Your work is appreciated!

Edited to remove graphic language.

www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81c83d07/article/texans-johnson-titans-finnegan-each-fined-25k-for-fight?module=HP_headlinesThey're both being fined $25,000 but no suspension. "Finnegan plans to avoid the fine." On what grounds, exactly? Can I appeal that it isn't high enough? And why no suspensions? Finnegan, who started the fight, had already been penalized/fined earlier in the season and warned. They got into a scuffle earlier in the game, and then Finnegan told the sideline "watch this..." then started the fight. So again I ask, why no suspensions? And what type of world are we living in where a fine for a player is more than twice what I made last year? I think that the player's salary should be prorated out per game and then they're fined on a percentage basis. Furthermore, on fines and suspensions, although there should be some consistency and guidelines, the NFL really needs to also factor into the mix the history of who's being penalized. They need to send a message to these people who are always looking for trouble. I've heard many jokes that the Baseball Hall of Fame should erect a statue of Bud Selig "looking the other way," and I hope that Godell's record isn't ultimately tainted by his handling of punishments. I'm glad I don't have his job.

Completely surprised Johnson doesn't get at least a one game suspension with the "law and order" mentality that Goddell brings.

Roger Goodell is obviously in touch with his female body part and has no balls whatsoever. Didn't realize someone could post something that graphic on a message board and not get kicked off of it.....

Johnson and Finnegan should have sat a game. Finnegan is a repeat offender and Johnson's punches were completely unacceptable. When I would have made my children not look at the screen because it is too violent, then something is very wrong.

An administrator has exercised that right on my post. That's his prerogative. The original language, while graphic, did not violate any of the four (4) caveats of the TOS in any way: 1. I reviewed what I wrote. I'm OK with the world reading it. 2. I did not direct my message at any user of this forum. 3. My message was not spam. 4. I had fun.

The post is under review. The post is not under review! FredFan7, you have already determined something because you felt compelled to edit a post. Besides, I can think of many words that are synonyms with (a whimp), all of which are also graphic. (a whimp) is not graphic it is a textbook term, like penis. mdhutton, you say that you are respectful to all users of this forum. How do you know that Mr. Goodell is not a member? The NFL needs to have BITE (fear/lack of a better word). After this fine, Andre Johnson is set to make 5.5 million and Courtland Finnigan is set to earn 2.6 million. I don't think that the 25k fine is meaningful, sounds good to a teacher though. These two should be suspended for the week 15 rematch - that is a simple solution.

I believe in this offseason the league and its officials will be sitting down and doing lots of discussions on how to deal with these offenses, and the helmet hits next year and on out. It just doesn't make sense to me these guys could go at each other and not get an suspension, if this happened on a city street, these two would have been arrested on the spot. The players are laughing all the way to the bank on these fines. Please remember to keep this site respectful of other peoples opinions, and keep your wording under control. Our administrators do a good job with this site, and keeping everyone updated with the information thats provided.

I hope there is a discussion in the off season concerning how to handle these offenders. A player who is a repeat offender needs to be given more than a fine. Suspend him x amount of games per offense.

The post is under review. mdhutton, you say that you are respectful to all users of this forum. How do you know that Mr. Goodell is not a member? I don't know that Mr. Goodell isn't a member. If he is, then I guess I'm guilty. I'll take my chances though. With the NFL prohibiting its officials from using social media, public forums, etc. it would follow that senior executives would hold themselves to the same standard. Sure, they allow commentary (i.e. Referees available to pool reporters and Mr. Johnson's weekly segment), but only when it is tightly controlled. I said what I had to say, I'd say it again and have made my point. I'm for moving on now...
