During the Pitt/Baltimore game Sunday night, when Flaco fumbled to set up the winning TD, Al Michaels was really focused on whether Flaco's arm was going forward. Replay clearly showed that his arm was not going forward, and it clearly was the correct call.
However, even if his arm HAD BEEN going forward, the ball shot backwards about five yards. It has always been my understanding that when a pass goes backwards, it is a backwards pass and is a live ball. Am I mistaken?

if i'm correct, so long as his arm is going forward, then it is just an incompletion even if it goes backwards. while backwards passes are live, because his arm is going forward and then falls incomplete, its just imcomplete. its one of those weird rules. someone feel free to correct me if i was wrong or to add more intormation, i'm no expert.

Correct. It's all about the arm motion here. If the intent is forward, it is an incomplete pass.

I've seen QB's cock their arms, get spun around while he is starting the throwing motion, and the pass actually is thrown backward. However, this is ruled an incomplete pass because the QB didn't MEAN to throw it backward, the defender spun him around. It is a very tough judgement call.
A more probable act is when the QB cocks his arm and is hit from behind. The ball pops out making for an "empty hands" pass. This is most likely ruled a fumble.

What if in the forward motion the pass accidently slides off the QB's hand, isn't that considered a fumble and live ball?

Thanks, guys. Is this rule unique to the NFL?

That would be a case of the "empty hand". Yes, that would be a fumble JayJay.
