ACC referee, Jack Childress, leaves the field. Good guy. Childress and Shaw both leave the field in the same year. Big loss when it is BCS Bowl time.... bit.ly/eNx2PB

Jack Childress was one of my favorite ACC referees. Much like Steve Shaw, Childress was always in command of the game. His explanations of calls were clear and concise. That makes two ACC Referees to leave the field. Tom DeJoseph retired after the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Jack's departure from the field is a loss to the ACC, but his knowledge and leadership will be great assets. As supervisor of the SoCon and the SAC, which he took over last year, many rising young officials will benefit.

Congrats to Childress. This is a well-deserved honor after a stellar on-field career (same with Steve Shaw).
One of our insiders or historians might have to answer this, but has there ever been a situation where an official turned down a supervisory position so that they could stay on the field?
