Thank you for the article. Very sad story. Ron Luciano and Durwood Merrill both spoke highly of him in their books, and Springstead seemed to be one of the marquee AL umpires in the 1970s. Rare photo in that article, seeing Springstead working with an inside protector. I thought he used the balloon his entire career, but I guess not.... Springstead IS the last umpire to call a World Series game with a balloon protector (1983). Sorry how his career ended in 2009. I hope he found peace in his last two years. RIP

Sad to hear of Marty's passing. He was one of the premier umpires of his time. He used the inside protector the last 2-3 years of his career. In regards to Earl Weaver, Marty had one of the great lines of all time: "If they want to test a Timex watch, they should tie it to Earl's tongue."
