Anyone hear anything on new hires for the upcoming season? When will the League office make the calls and who has the best shot?

For what it's worth, Brad Allen worked NC State's spring game. That could be an indication he'll be back in the ACC.

If there aren't many (or one or two) retirements this season, it will just postpone a flood of retirements in 2013-14.
I really think the lack of a CBA at this time is really holding things up.

I heard from a highly-placed source that the CBA negotiations are stalled and that the lack of progress there has halted the hiring process, as FF7 suggests. I believe the end of the "no-contact" period is May 15th and perhaps there will be further news at that point.

Are we looking at another officials stoppage like in 2001 and having replacement refs on the field?

Would it be a lockout or strike?
I don't think either side is spoiling for a work action. I would hope that even if no agreement is reached the officials will work without a CBA.
It has gotten much harder to work a NFL game in the last 11 years. I don't think we need to have 117 brand new officials work the game at today's speed.
But remember, we have a long way to go before lockouts or picket signs.

I can't imagine a lockout or a strike, not after what happened in 2001. I agree, with all the new rules, technology, it would be very difficult to just stick anyone on the field and expect the same quality of officiating we have had here...

The potential retirees and hires need time to get their ducks in a row. I would think a NCAA official probably has to commit to a schedule soon. If this CBA drags into June or July, we might not see any roster turnover for 2012. They, Katie bar the door in 2013.

What happened to the replacement officials from 2001? Are they still in the college or semi pro ranks?

What happened to the replacement officials from 2001? Are they still in the college or semi pro ranks? Look under Crew Archives in the General Section. There's a spreadsheet that includes the replacement officials from 2001. I would guess some are still active....
