I mean are any of them still in college or semi pro or were they excommunicated after crossing the line?

I see Jack Folliard's name. I believe he is still a PAC-12 Referee.

I mean are any of them still in college or semi pro or were they excommunicated after crossing the line? Their crossing the line in 2001 did not impact their NCAA status. There would have been problems if a candidate had crossed the lines and then gotten hired full time later. It would have caused crew disharmony. To the NFL's credit, I don't think they approached any serious applicants and asked them to cross the line.

I believe the NFL learned from MLB how NOT to handle these situations. After the 1979 umpires strike, MLB retained several of the replacement umpires that had worked during the strike. The results were not pretty, with a lot of the "scabs" being hung out to dry by the union umpires. The NFL, in my opinion, did a much better job of handling things in 2001 than MLB did in 1979.

Well some of the "scabs" were just not that good. John Shulock though made it all the way to crew chief I believe

You also have to remember, many of not most of the NFL officials work white collar jobs and are part of management Monday through Friday.
Work stoppages are not their thing.

Can someone post the list of scabs from 2001 please? You'll have to paste the below address into your browser. spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0Av4G3CWJx7iedGM3UUtycjhNbXpMUE1ScVNNZVlRcFE&gid=2It looks like retired NFL officials who were in the front office as observers were pressed into duty. Their new position was management and they were probably mandated to work. On another note, umpire Bill Haller had retired from the field and moved to an observer's position. When the umpires went on strike in the 1984 playoffs, he refused to cross the picket lines and work the playoffs after being asked by MLB. Haller claims his refusal lead him to be fired from his front office position.

Coukart, Duke, Baynes and others may be called upon then...
