I'm not familiar with officiating mechanics in hockey, but there was a situation in tonight's Rangers-Senators game that made me scratch my head.
An Ottawa player sucker punched a New York player (knocking him to the ground) and started wailing on him. Meanwhile, the referee who was a foot away from the altercation stood there with is arm raised and didn't do anything to stop the altercation. By the time the linesmen got there, the situation got out of control and several players were going at it. The Ottawa player was booted, along with a NYR player who received a game misconduct for being the "3rd man in."
Why aren't referees responsible for stopping altercations in the NHL? This is a situation that could have been kept under control and we're lucky someone wasn't seriously hurt.

Linesmen are charged with breaking up fights. Referees call the penalties. If the referee was busy breaking up a fight, he'd have never gotten the third man in penalty. Now, with a second referee, sometimes one of the two referees help out during a line brawl, but nine times out of ten, when there a scrum, it's the linesmen's turn to go to work!
EDIT: Linesmen work like heck during the game calling icing, offside, handling a majority of the faceoffs, and assisting the referee in other rulings. They don't just break up fights!

Mayhem in game three of the first round Flyers-Penguins playoff series. 72 penalty minutes in the first period, including a 10-minute match penalty on a Pengiun (deliberately causing injury to an opponent).
Anyone see youtube, etc.?

.....as long as they don't break the time honored tradition of NHL officiating namely let the players decide the game and don't make marginal calls late in the game that could decide the game. It's a time honored tradition and the proper way to adjudicate an ice hockey match.

NHL hockey is the only high level sport where the official has to be as highly skilled as the players. You don't have to be a good hitter or pitcher to translate into being an umpire. You don't have to be a good dribbler to be a good basketball referee. You don't have to have good blocking technique to be a football official. But, in hockey, you have to be as good of a skater as the players. They have to pivot, stop, sprint, and cut as well as the players in order to carry out their duties. Their bodies take a cardiovascular and physical pounding. I guess that's why a hockey official's career starts in his mid-20s and end by the time he's 50 (usually sooner). Hockey officiating looks like a lot of fun, but since I can't skate, alas, it was never in the cards for me!

This has been a difficult post season to officiate up to this point due to all the aggression and what is at stake. Also, with emphasis on player safety, these suspensions are going to hurt teams. Players need to learn to play within confines of rules when stakes are this high.
Nothing more exciting than a Stanley Cup Overtime game.

I've never seen this much violence in the NHL playoffs. I agree with FF7 that a message needs to be sent.
Imagine what might happen if we get a Rangers-Devils series...

Shanahan laying down the law (hopefully): Torres suspended pending hearing. www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=628445That's a shot that can't be accepted under any circumstances. Even if the intent wasn't to injure, Torres left his feet, launched high with the elbows, and went to head well after Hossa played the puck. Given Torres' rep & the fact that Hossa went off on a stretcher, Torres will likely be sitting for quite a while.
