Bill Haller, AL Umpire from 1961-82, was honored on the Illinois House floor. He was interviewed afterward. bit.ly/I2LIUYHe was a great umpire and I think deserves consideration for the HOF. If you want to see him in action, google "Earl Weaver" on youtube and be ready for a not-suitable-for-work classic.

Haller was Ron Luciano's crew chief for much of Ron's career. In one of his books, Luciano expressed high regard for Haller, adding that he knew he drove Haller crazy with some of his antics.

Haller was Ron Luciano's crew chief for much of Ron's career. In one of his books, Luciano expressed high regard for Haller, adding that he knew he drove Haller crazy with some of his antics. Dave Phillips credits Haller for helping his career. His first two crew chiefs (Nestor Chylak and Larry Napp) were very harsh and negative and didn't offer constructive criticism and tips to help him. Ken Kaiser also gives Haller big credit. Kaiser, in his book, says he was about ready to work the plate late in the year in a big Red Sox - Yankees game with first place on the line. The game was on national TV. Dick Butler, umpires supervisor, came in to the locker room before the game and told Kaiser to work a good game because his career was on the line. Haller chased his BOSS out of the locker room screaming at him for harassing Kaiser before the game. Many other umpires have voiced the utmost respect for Bill Haller.

Bill Haller was one of the best of his era and retired too young. If he worked another 5-10 years he was definitely HOF.
Nestor Chylak was a great on field umpire. I also heard from a former umpire from one of his crew less than positive's on how he treated/respected younger umpire's. Very old school.
