Maybe one of his teen kids are going through something that requires his close attention. Maybe his wife said, "It's me or officiating." Maybe he got tired of being homesick for his family. Maybe he's sick. Maybe the NHL allowed him to retire instead of terminating him.
Who knows for sure.
But, if it is to spend more time with his family, I applaud him for making this decision and wish him the best.

10 playoff games in 12 years? No offense but that doesn't sound like a good ratio, especially because there are 60-105 playoff games a year.

He made the playoffs early on in his career - I want to say in year 2 or 3 of his full-time status. Then hasn't made it since.

I wish him best of luck in the future....I wish I could have officiated 12 years in professional sports, hope he went out on his terms and was not suggested he retire. NHL is not like baseball as Officials seem to be held more accountable and turnover in positions appear higher, with decisions made by the league rather than the individual.
The NBA has used the suggestive tactic in the past in retirement.
